The elected member of parliament for Bukedea District Women Constituency, Anita Among has replaced the fallen Rt Hon.Jacob Oulanyah as the new speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda.

In a plenary sitting that was held on Friday 25 (Today), Anita Among garnered 401 votes while JEEMA’s Asumani Basalirwa walked away with 66 votes. Only one vote has been registered invalid.
Anita is the second woman after Rt. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaaga to rise to the third most important position in Uganda, after the President and Vice President.
Among’s election comes 5 days after the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah who passed away in Seattle, USA on Sunday.
The elections were presided over by the Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo who made the announcement of the poll results to the Members of Parliament.
Anita, immediately took oath of office and was handed the instruments of authority by President Museveni.
While addressing parliamentarians, Mr. Museveni expressed discontent on the speed level expressed by legislators to replace Oulanyah.
“This is the consequence of copying European things blindly, like this election. I think we should find a way of sorting it out so that in future we don’t have the same madness. Someone is not buried and we are here engaging in elections,” He said
