The leader of the National Unity Platform(NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has urged young people who are interested in promoting liberal values to work as hard as those who are committed to destroying them.
Kyagulanyi made the remarks while speaking to over 300 young leaders who gathered in Dakar Senegal.
“I have seen no autocrat who does not work hard, and yet unfortunately, those who are interested in democratic rule are oftentimes not willing to burn the midnight candle to promote these cherished values, “he said.
Kyagulanyi implored young people that the struggle for change should go beyond attending conferences and speaking good English.
He urged the youth to invest time in organisation, in civic education and in mobilizing the masses to support the struggle.
“I salute those of you who are doing this- let us double efforts. Let’s organise, organise and organise. Let us remain optimistic. Many times, the future looks bleak and dark. There are many times when one feels like giving up, but historical events such as the triumph of anti-colonial forces, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the several victories of democratic forces all over the world assure us that it is possible and it will be possible to triumph, “he said.
He called upon young people to build a strong network because autocrats work together, promote each other, speak together and defend each other.
“Those of us who are interested in liberal values must do the same. Let us be each other’s keeper. In other words, let us be the united forces of Change. To find so many young people meeting, not to discuss Manchester United and Arsenal, not to discuss where the next party is- but young people discussing the future of Africa and the world is very encouraging, “he said.
Kyagulanyi said that these past few years, liberal values have come under attack and there has been a deliberate, sustained attack against democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“We meet at a time when the world’s autocrats and dictators, scattered across different continents, are getting emboldened to carry out the most despicable actions against their citizens. We meet at a time when young political activists are being tortured or detained for simply speaking out to the powers that be, “he said.
