UPDF Commander of Land Forces and first son to President Yoweri Museveni, Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced his intention to retire from the UPDF army.

Gen Muhoozi says he is satisfied with 28 years service and achievements in the UPDF.
“After 28 years of service in my glorious military, the greatest military in the world, I am happy to announce my retirement. Me and my soldiers have achieved so much! I have only love and respect for all those great men and women that achieve greatness for Uganda everyday,” He revealed through his Twitter.
The first son started his military training in 1994 after he left high school. He
formally joined the UPDF in 1999 before being admitted at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he graduated in 2000.
In 2007, he joined the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and graduated in 2008.
Muhoozi was promoted to the rank of Major General in May 2016 shortly.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in 2019 which meant that in a space of 20 years, Muhoozi has risen from the rank of sergeant to Lt General.
Muhoozi’s announcement has triggered missed emotions amongst his followers as some believe he used the wrong platform for his announcement.
Olocho Isaac said: “Formally retire, write to the commander in chief. Don’t retire on Twitter. If you want to join politics you are welcome but prepare yourself for a rough ride. Have you heard of politics being a dirty game? . Am just speculating you want to join politics”
One Jordan appreciated him for serving the nation wholeheartedly. “You have truly served your nation like no one else in the army. We appreciate your immense achievements & we continue to pray that you serve Uganda as a Commander in Chief in 2026 & beyond,” He said
“Arent you supposed to first get a certificate from the High command or something. Apparently you don’t just up and leave.Consult your other Uncle Sejjusa.” Marvo said.
Sebunya Shafiq said: “Thanks for serving your nation General. You have been instrumental in building a strong force. God bless you our next president.”
Muhoozi however is subjected to approval from the army.
