The Bishop of the Diocese of Kitgum, Rt Rev. Wilson Kitara has commended government efforts in pacifying Northern Uganda and household social economic empowerment.

Kitara said this was through promotion of community mobilisation, mindset change, agricultural production, value chain development, food security and income among religious leaders, congregations and the communities.
Kitara said this in an interview about the recently commissioned agriculture programme that is part of the social economic transformation project being implemented by Church of Uganda with support from National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS).
The initiative is aimed at improving the well being of religious leaders, congregations and Communities.
Kitara said the project will help in improving the welfare of the clergy who are the grassroot mobilizers in promoting peace, harmonious living and agents of community transformation.
“It’s good that our Clergy are going to be more practical and own assets in terms of livestock. We received 39 in-calf Friesian heifers and 200 piglets which were distributed to beneficiaries. They were trained on animal husbandry and livestock management. This is a step in the right direction towards enhancing income security,”Kitara said.
He said this is a big push for Northern Uganda as the country recovers from the trauma of the two decades of war in the area as people lived in Internally Displaced Camps (IDP Camps).
“Many people of the current young generation were born in this state and as such have a high dependency syndrome which we need to address through mindset change. I urge people of Northern Uganda especially the youths to spend their time more productively and responsibly. We are blessed with land as a natural resource, therefore laziness should not be the reason for our failing to reduce poverty,”he said.
