The Kabale Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma has condemned Church leaders that organize undefined functions to generate income for survival. He believes that this has spearheaded the rise of corruption in the country.
Nyakahuma was today speaking among the panelists during the Eastern African Center for Anti-corruption studies stakeholder conference that was organized by the faculty of Arts and Social Science at Kabale University under the theme “The role of Academia in anti-corruption fight” in Kabale district.
Among the panelists were; Rev. Oscar Mwesigwa, the inspector of schools in the diocese of Kigezi who represented the Diocesan Secretary Rev. Can. Erasmus Turyatunga, Robert Kakuru Byamugisha the Executive Director Kick corruption out of Uganda, Benjamin Mayanja, Agaba Sam the head of IGG office Kigezi sub region, Mugisha James the Deputy CAO Kabale district and Godfrey Nyakahuma the Kabale RDC.
Nyakahuma said that the church leaders have on several times given thieves front seats and to make matters worse also give them blessings which has given them moreal to go and steal more money from the government hence leading to poor service delivery. He asked religious leaders to desist from blessing and giving thieves front seats in church and called for need to have legal regimes that are proactive.
Evelyn Ninsiima Kikafunda, the former Rubanda district woman parliamentary aspirant and Robert Kakuru Byamugisha, the Executive Director Kick corruption out of Uganda said fighting corruption will need a combined effort and involvement of all stakeholders if it is to be effectively implemented but not leaving it to the high government offices.
According to Prof. Benon Basheka the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of academic affairs who represented the vice chancellor of Kabale university narrated that the workshop aimed at establishing the East African centre for corruption studies at Kabale University that will be under the faculty of Arts and social Sciences which prompted the University to engage all academicians to share knowledge how it will effectively be implemented at university.
