Makerere councilors under their body ‘MAk councilors Forum’ faced police rath when the laws makers impounded the forum’s food relief.
Through their umbrella that unites all serving Makerere Unit councilors both on division and urban level the councilors headed by the deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjula, yesterday engaged in an exercise of helping their electroate with food relief and other essential home use through a door to door exercise.
The team had seen it wise to first put their political differences aside and step in for their people since the government relief has not reached most of them in their respective areas.
The Police however, working on orders of Kawempe Redential city commissioner (RCC) identified as kato intercepted the exercise and impounded a track full of Councilor’s covid19 relief food.
During the police’s operation, Nyanjula revealed that the councilors’ exercise was not a security operation but rather, a social welfare operation and if the the RCC could give permission for food to be donated, she too as Kampala deputy Lordmayor in charge of the city has a right to equally do the same.
“We shall not watch our people starve to death, we shall come to their rescue. We shall continue championing the common man’s cause” bitter Nyanjura said
Makerere University has a very big composition of vulnerable including unemployed retirees, pensioners, underpaid non teaching staff, who largely depend on selling simple snacks to students would are currently off campus.
Councilors who participated in exercise include Councilor Akampurira Harris, Muganga Micdad, Ssekindi Faizal, Aguti , Yudaya, Winter , mugisha, Osborn ND kajungu.
However, Police later let the Councilors to continue with their food distribution to the vulnerable people after they expressed at most defiance.
