The inspectorate government in kabale on Thursday arrested the Kabale State attorney Edwin Mbabazi for soliciting a bribe of up to Shs500,000. He was caught receiving a gratification of Shs125,000.
He was nubbed after a complaint from a member of the public whom he was promising to have his criminal case closed. The victim had been accused of trespass against a resident of Kyanamira Town Coucil in Kabale District. His case was transferred to Kabale police station.
“He had been arrested and released on bond by Kabale Police on September 30, 2022. When he reported back to Police, he was told that his case had been forwarded to the Kabale state attorney. He then went to the office of the State Attorney to inform him that there was another civil matter which was before the Kabale Chief Magistrates Court concerning the same land he was accused of trespassing under court file No. Civil Misc. Application No. 39 of 2022,” the IG stated.
The IG said Mbabazi promised to peruse through his file and get back to him through his phone number.
“That Mbabazi contacted him on Monday, October 10, using a telephone number and asked him to offer a bribe of Shs500,000 in order to close the criminal case against him, the statement reveals.
This prompted the accused to report the matter to Kabale Regional Office for redress.
“He was, however, arrested while allegedly receiving a part payment of sh125,000. He is being brought to Kampala and will be charged for soliciting and receiving gratification,” the statement reads
The office of the DPP acknowledged the arrest and promised to follow up the matter.
